帽子事業とアーサー・カペル

ココが帽子デザインに興味を持ったのには、バルサンの後押しがありました。

実際に、1909年に帽子のアトリエをオープンした時はバルサンが出資したのです。

彼女が作る帽子は、余計な装飾品を一切排除した非常にシンプルなもので、この頃から既に彼女の実用主義的な価値観がデザインに反映されていたことが窺えます。

今までにないシンプルな帽子はたちまち評判になり、ココは更に事業を拡大し、上を目指したいと思うようになりました。

しかし問題は、バルサンがどれだけ援助をしてくれるか、ということです。

バルサンはココの事業成功を喜びつつ、基本的には「女性は働くものではない」という古風な考え方（当時はそれが当たり前だったのですが）の持ち主でした。

ですから、ココの事業拡大に協力的になるかというとそういうタイプではありません。

アトリエをオープンした翌年、ココには新たにパリ・カンボン通りに帽子専門店「シャネル・モード」をオープンさせるのですが、この時の出資者は、バルサン邸で知り合った裕福なイギリス人、アーサー・カペルです。

後にココが生涯で唯一愛した男性になるカペルは、ココの、当時の女性としては斬新な価値観を素直に受け入れ、ありのままの彼女を愛するようになったのです。

ココとカペルが恋人同士になり、ココの帽子事業が拡大を見せると同時に、ココとバルサンの関係も終わりを迎えます。

hat business and Arthur Capel

Coco was interested in hat design, inspired by Balsan.

Indeed, Balsan invested money in her opening the atelier to make hats in 1909.

Hats made by her is very simple that excludes any decorative accessories and it can be already found that her pragmatic sense of values were reflected in her design.

A simple design of hat never seen before became popular immediately, and Coco has expanded its business and hoped to achieve more success.

But the problem was how much Balsan helps her.

While Balsan was pleased with the success of Coco's business, he basically had the old-fashioned way of thinking that women should not work (it was common at that time).

He was not the type of the person who is cooperative with the expansion of Coco's business.

After opening the atelier in the following year, Coco Chanel opened her new shop on rue Cambon in Paris, creating hats under the name Chanel Modes. A wealthy British man, Arthur Capel who became acquainted with her at Balsan's house financed her shop.

Capel, the only man whom Chanel had loved in her lifetime, recognized her innovative sense of values among women at that time, and began to love her as she was.

Chanel began an affair with Capel. As her hat business boomed, the relationship between Chanel and Balsan was over.
