ココの最大のライバルは、イタリア出身のデザイナー、エルザ・スキャパレリです。
裕福な家庭で生まれ育った彼女には、幼い頃から芸術に触れる機会が多くありました。
また、父の赴任先のアメリカでは新しい文化に触れ、彼女の様々な経験が、後のファッションデザインに大きな影響を与えたと言われています。
スキャパレリは、「ショッキングピンクの生みの親」と言われていて、その派手な色彩がかえって斬新で話題を呼ぶことになりました。
シュールリアリズムに影響を受け、芸術家との親交の中で彼女のデザインは一層芸術と結び付いていきます。
それは、ココのシンプルさとは対極のスタイルです。
ポール・ポワレもココの有力なライバルでした。
彼はココよりも年上で、ココよりも早くコルセットを外したスタイルを提案しました。
但し、ポワレのラインはもっとフェミニンなものです。
彼はココのデザインを見た時に、「女性が女性ではなくなった」と嘆いています。
それは男性と女性の、根本的な価値観の違いが大きかったのだと思います。
ポワレの理想の女性像とココの目指す女性像は全く異なり、このことが二人の間にデザインの確たる差を生み、互いにライバル意識に燃える理由になったのだと思われます。

While Coco Chanel's simple and practical fashion was popular, designers who had completely different ideas were also active in the fashion industry.
Chanel's chief rival was considered Elsa Schiaparelli, an Italian designer.
