孤児院時代

ガブリエルが姉ジュリアと共に送られたのは、オーバズィーヌにあるシトー会修道院です。

ロマネスク様式の伝統ある建築物でしたが、ガブリエルはこの場所が大嫌いでした。

負けず嫌いだった彼女は、父からの愛情を失い、お金もなく、屈辱感の中で貧乏暮らしに耐えなくてはならなかったのです。

寄宿舎での生活は、祈祷し、定期的に散歩をし、裁縫をするといった単調なものでした。

この時デザイナーになることをまだ考えていなかったガブリエルにとって、裁縫もまた大嫌いな時間でした。

修道院では友達にいつも嘘を言っていました。

父親に捨てられたも同然でしたが、「父はワイン商人で現在アメリカにいる。戻ってきたら迎えに来てくれる」というように、物事を全て脚色して誤魔化す癖がついていました。

しかし、修道院の生活では、後に彼女のインスピレーションの源になるような体験を沢山していました。

もっとも、当の本人は相変わらず修道院から出たいという一心で生活していましたが、修道院の生活は、後に彼女が作り上げたシャネル帝国のイメージに通じるものがあります。

ガブリエルは、制服になっている白いブラウスに黒のスカート、黒のヴェールという格好に違和感を感じながらも、後に彼女は修道女の制服にインスパイアされたかのような、独自の「ブラック・シック」なスタイルを確立することになります。

Time spent in the Orphanage

Gabriel was sent with her older sister Julia to Cistercian Abbey in Aubazine.

Although she had always lived with the desire to leave a convent, the life of a convent leads to the image of the Chanel Empire she made later.

While Gabriel felt uncomfortable with the uniform, a white blouse with a black skirt and a black veil, she later established her own black chic style as if she was inspired by a nun's uniform style.
