香水「No.5」の成功
1920年、この当時交際していたロシア人貴族のディミトリ大公から、一人のフランス人を紹介されました。
エルネスト・ボーという調香師です。
エルネストはロシア出身のフランス人で、父親はロシア皇帝に仕え、自らも皇室お抱えの調香師をしていました。
ココ・シャネルは、ディミトリの後押しもあり、エルネストと組んで香水を作ることにしました。
エルネストが80種類以上の香りをブレンドした試作品を幾つも作り、ココがその中からたった1種類を選ぶのです。
数ある試作品の中で、サンプルのNo.1～5、No.20～24が残り、最終的にココが選んだのは、5番目の試作品でした。
こうして二人の共同作業で生み出された香水が「シャネルNo.5」です。
1921年に発売され、後に世界的なベストセラーになり、伝説の香水になります。
ココは、香水の名前を敢えて「No.5」にしました。
試作品番号をそのまま商品名にするという発想は、それまでどの香水メーカーにもなかったもので、斬新なアイデアでした。
また、シンプルで直線的なフォルムのボトルもまた、当時の香水ボトルのイメージから考えられないものでした。
香水の名前やボトルの形は、「余計なものは一切排除する」というココの哲学の現れと言えるでしょう。
シャネルNo.5は大ヒットをし、勢いに乗ったココは1924年に香水専門の会社「パルファン・シャネル」を設立します。

The Success of Fragrance Chanel No. 5
In 1920, one Frenchman was introduced to her by Russian Imperial Highness, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich who had the relashionship with her then.
He is a perfumer called Ernest Beaux.
Ernest is a Frenchman from Russia. His father served the Russian emperor, so he was also a perfumer for the imperial family.
Coco Chanel was inspired by Dmitri Pavlovich, and decided to work with Ernest Beaux to make perfume.
Ernest Beaux made over 80 blended samples for Chanel, who chose the only one sample.
Perfume samples numbered 1-5 and 20-24 remained among a number of samples, and finally Chanel chose the fifth sample.
Thus two of them collaborated to create the perfume, Chanel No. 5.
It was released in 1921, and later became the world best seller and a legendary perfume.
Chanel dared to adopt a name to the perfume "No.5".
The idea of adopting the sample number as the product name was a novel idea, which had not been found in any perfume maker until then.
Also, a bottle in a simple and straight form was unconventional among the general images of a perfume bottle at the time.
It can be said that the name of the perfume and the shape of the bottle represent her principle - Less is more.
Chanel No. 5 generated a big hit. Taking advantage of this momentum, Chanel established a company specializing in perfume "Les Parfums Chanel" in 1924.
